In 1975, four visionaries, who would become the principal owners and developers of the SIR (Scientific Information Retrieval) line of computer software, met and discovered a mutual need for data management tools oriented towards research and analytical applications. Their original vision led to conceptual and technical innovations for relational data management that have been implemented in the SIR software (the underlying search engine for heartbase. Thirty years later, the SIR software has evolved into a general-purpose database system that is installed in many different government organizations, medical facilities and research institutions on six continents.
